Original Anchor Distilling — founded 1993 as the spirits arm of Anchor Brewing under Fritz Maytag's leadership. Released Old Potrero Single Malt Rye in 1996, the first American rye whiskey produced after a decades-long category dormancy and the spark for the modern American rye revival. Junipero (1996) was similarly category-defining for American gin. Renamed Hotaling & Co in 2017 (after the Hotaling family who saved the SF whiskey warehouse from the 1906 earthquake fire). Spirits operations continue independently of the Anchor Brewing brand which closed in 2023.
